OpenAI has called on the US government to ban the use of artificial intelligence models from the Chinese company DeepSeek in sensitive sectors, describing the rival company as supported by the Chinese state and controlled by it in an official letter sent to the Office of Science and Technology Policy.
In her letter
signed by Chris Lahin, vice president for global affairs at the company, OpenAI explained that Chinese DeepSeek models pose a significant security risk, calling for their ban in government, military, and intelligence institutions.
In her letter, the company recommended banning Chinese equipment, such as Huawei Ascend chips, and models that violate user privacy or endanger national security, according to the letter.
The speech noted that the United States leads the world in the field of artificial intelligence but faces stiff competition from the Chinese Communist Party, which seeks to surpass it by 2030.
The company believes that the new work plan of the Trump administration in the field of artificial intelligence can ensure the superiority of American models based on democratic principles over those adopted by China, which it called authoritarian.
The artificial intelligence sector witnessed a state of controversy after the DeepSeek-R1 model provided almost the same performance as ChatGPT models in inference tests, but at a much lower cost, and it was even free when used via the browser.
This led to a significant decline in the shares of companies investing in artificial intelligence, before the market rebalanced later.
Questions were raised about the speed of development of DeepSeek, as some experts doubted that its models relied on an innovative training methodology or that it extracted training data from OpenAI in violation of the terms of use.
OpenAI warned of the danger of building critical infrastructure on models such as DeepSeek, noting the possibility of the Chinese Communist Party directing the model to carry out malicious manipulations.
In a related context, OpenAI confirmed that the world is on the cusp of the stage of general artificial intelligence (AGI), which are intelligence systems that possess human-like cognitive abilities. The company stressed the need to ensure free access to this development, away from bureaucratic restrictions and excessive laws that hinder progress.
